Last year the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon was in the news frequently. Despite the public outrage at the length of the spill and the amount of oil released, there has been no administrative action to prevent such an accident again.
Did you know that there were many more leaks besides the Deepwater Horizon? United Kingdom reports state over 100 spills occurred just in the North Sea last year, many of them operated by Shell. Exxon Mobil's Yellowstone pipeline recently burst after they were warned of seven safety violations.
Thees are just a few examples. Yet oil companies are still allowed to drill in environmentally sensitive areas, manage to skirt full responsibility for damages, and receive huge government subsidies, all while raking in billions of dollars of profits per year.
If all of this bothers you, contact your local representatives, and support organizations like Oceana, the largest international advocacy group working solely to protect the world’s oceans.
